Note: The 2023 installment of this event has already taken place.
The American Short Film Festival was founded in 1999 by actor and Screen Actors Guild member Tetsuya Bessho. The festival was created to introduce the short film genre he encountered in the US to a Japanese audience. The festival was renamed the Short Shorts Film Festival in 2001 and was recognized as an Academy Award accredited film festival in 2004.
That same year, the Short Shorts Film Festival Asia, co-sponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, was established to promote new visual culture from Asia and nurture up-and-coming young filmmakers. The two festivals have since merged to become the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia.
In 2023, the international category of the festival celebrates its 25th anniversary, and the Asia-Japan category celebrates its 20th. In line with this year's theme of "unlocking," the easing of COVID-19 restrictions means that filmmakers from around the world are scheduled to attend the festival in Japan for the first time in three years.
This year, the festival will also be held online from April 27 to July 10.
