The Ukera-no-Shinji is a traditional Shinto ritual held on Setsubun, the day before the beginning of spring. The ritual is known as tsuina, or the exorcism of evil spirits. At the ritual, there will be various ceremonial activities, such as hikimeshiki (the firing of arrows to drive off evil spirits) and mamemaki (bean-throwing meant to drive off evil spirits).
At this shrine, the red and blue demons are considered demons of disease. "Ukera" is a type of medicinal herb.
