Drinking & Dining
Despite the relocation of Tsukiji's main inner market to Toyosu, there are still approximately 460 shops huddled together in the outer market. One of the most appealing things about Tsukiji is the ability to consult with the professionals as you make your purchase. Be in no doubt: this remains a great place to buy seafood. It's an ideal place to eat it, too, with fresh sushi and seafood bowls being sold from the early morning. You'll also find cafes selling Western-style food and coffee.
Tsukiji Uogashi, a brand-new complex that opened in October 2018, is home to around 60 intermediate wholesalers selling seafood, fruit, and vegetables. Shoppers with good timing can even catch the professionals filleting huge tuna. The building also has a restaurant and, on the rooftop, an open-air space. Access is restricted from 5:00 to 9:00 to make way for the workers bringing in fresh stock, so it's best to visit after that.
