Foxes, frogs, and a thousand fluttering flags

Experience the older, spiritual side of Tokyo at Toyokawa Inari Tokyo Betsuin Temple, surrounded by beautiful red lanterns along the long earthen wall around it. This temple is famous for its hundreds of fox statues, called Inari foxes after one of the principal deities of Japan's native Shinto religion. There are a few frog statues, as well as thousands of red flags that flutter inside the temple.

The temple is often visited by singers, TV personalities, and expectant mothers who pray at the shrines dedicated to deities of wealth, entertainment, and safe childbirth. Toyokawa Inari Tokyo Betsuin Temple is located a short walk from either Nagatacho or Akasaka-mitsuke Stations.
