Fully enjoy the Tokyo spring dyed in the color of cherry blossoms

The long-awaited pink blooms convey the fact that the harsh winter is finally ending – this is the arrival of the cherry blossom season, which is a famous part of spring in Japan. The cherry blossoms can only be enjoyed for two weeks of the entire year, so everybody goes to view these flowers. For that reason, famous spots that are known as good places for viewing cherry blossoms become very lively during this season, regardless of the time of day. During these two weeks, when Tokyo is dyed in the color of cherry blossoms, people feel the transition to a warmer season inside their hearts.

There are many famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo, including Ueno Onshi Park, Asukayama Park, the Meguro River, Chidorigafuchi, and more. This year attention is being paid to the cherry blossoms along the bank of the Sumida River (called “bokutei”) in Sumida City, which is the location of the Tokyo Sky Tree that will open on May 22.

A total of 100 cherry blossom trees were planted according to the order of Tokugawa Yoshimune (the eighth shogun) in the year 1717. Since then many people have planted trees in this area, and the bokutei cherry bloom trees have become a famous spot. Because of this around 1,000 trees can be enjoyed on both sides of the river today. The bokutei cherry trees, which stretch for around 1.3 kilometers from the Sakurabashi Bridge to right before the Makurabashi Bridge, are also a registered cultural property of Sumida City.

Events in the bokutei area include the Bokutei Cherry Blossom Festival, Cherry Blossom Tsutsumi Dori Street Flower Festival (Higashi Shirahige Park), and more. This spring, why not set out to view the completed Tokyo Sky Tree together with cherry blossoms?
