Spend a full-on day of shopping at upscale Ginza or at Harajuku, the youth fashion capital of Japan. Browse through traditional department stores filled with the latest fashions, or indulge in postmodern consumerism at ultra-modern shopping complexes.

  • Most department stores take credit cards, but bring some cash for the smaller boutiques
  • Stay nourished and hydrated at restaurant facilities in each of the shopping complexes
  • Pack light but carry a big bag for purchases
  • Even for travelers on a budget, people watching at high fashion locations can be fascinating

Ginza Station

There are many exits leading up to the streets, but enter Ginza in style by exiting the station via the luxury department stores of Wako or Mitsukoshi and out onto the main boulevard.

Head down the main street to the gleaming Ginza Six building. It houses shops dedicated to modern living and a range of restaurants and bars for you to toast to a day of elegance. Be sure to check out the House of Dior and Fendi shops for a taste of high living.

Enter through the main gate, taking in the massiveness of the building. Take a look at the floor guide to get your bearings before exploring. Each floor caters to a specific category of items, so take your time browsing through the ones that interest you. Men will find shops that cater to them in a separate building. Head up to the 7th floor for a quick brunch, or to have a look at traditional kimono accessories.

Packed nearly every day of the week, take your time strolling down this long street filled with hip boutiques and trendy fashionistas. Snack on a delectable crêpe at one of the iconic crêperies, and browse the eclectic stores at your own pace without getting caught up in the crowds. Spend some time here people-watching, catching glimpses of all the fascinating trends-on-feet walking around.

A "fashion theme park" filled with new trends and hip brands

Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku

Take the futuristic, gleaming escalator leading into the heart of the building, and spend some hard-earned cash at any of the glamorous stores inside. Head up to the gardened terrace for a coffee, while enjoying the greenery.

Gyre

Go down Omotesando Avenue to find Gyre. Take some time before entering to admire its ultra-modern architecture. Boasting a Bulgari shop and cafe, and the first MoMA Design Store opened outside of New York City, take in the elegant atmosphere while shopping for upscale pleasures.

Cat Street

You'll find the entrance to Cat Street right outside of Gyre. Stroll down the quaint shopping street, while stopping by designer boutiques and small used clothing stores. Be sure to check out the plethora of fashionable bistros and eateries lining the streets that are as delicious as their interiors are chic.

An icon of Japanese youth fashion that started it all

Shibuya109

Navigate through the bustling streets of Shibuya until you come to Shibuya109—known as the birthplace of Japanese gyaru fashion. Jam-packed with flashy fashion, metallic accessories and gaudy hairdos, appreciate the stark contrast between a softer, cuter Harajuku, and sexy, girly Shibuya109. Again, men will have to venture to a separate building for fashion brands catering to them.
