Explore Tokyo's weird and wonderful youth culture

Bathed in bright neon, the non-stop streets radiate out from the famous scramble crossing. A mix of cheap, fun fashion, outrageous street style and all-night bars and clubs, Shibuya is known for fast fashion and crazy clubbing, but you can find cool, calm spots from the hip side streets around Jinnan to hybrid spaces like hotel koé.

General Tips

  • Get on top of the latest fashion fads at Shibuya109
  • The windows of Qfront are a popular spot to photograph the crossing, but you can get less crowded views from the walkway between Shibuya Station and Shibuya Mark City
  • Chill out on the roof terrace at Hands Cafe in Hands, for light meals and free Wi-Fi
  • Wander down Nombei Yokocho, the tiny alley of bars next to the train lines, marked by red lanterns

A transport hub and popular meeting place

Shibuya Station

So many train lines converge on Shibuya Station above and below ground, it's easy to get lost. Follow the color-coded signs and allow extra time for transfers. Look out for exits marked “Hachiko” to reach the main scramble crossing. Many Narita Express services stop at Shibuya, making it a convenient access point from the airport.

A symbol of loyalty and a rendezvous point

Hachiko Statue

The bronze statue of Hachiko, the Akita dog who famously waited outside the station for his master every day, is one of Tokyo's most famous meeting points, but it gets so crowded, that you might have trouble finding your friends. Come earlier in the day to get a good photo with Hachiko.

An elaborate dance of near misses

Shibuya Scramble Crossing

Featured in movies and music videos, the scramble crossing is a must-see. Essentially five separate crossings across a huge intersection, everyone sets off at once, seldom crashing into each other. Be careful when taking photos that you don't walk into people.

Sophisticated shopping and culture

Shibuya Hikarie

On the south side of the station, Shibuya Hikarie is aimed at those who've grown out of Shibuya's teen fun. Connected directly to the station, the shopping floors have fashion, homewares and stylish takeout food, topped by two floors of restaurants. Head up to level eight for design, art and a theater with great views over the city.
