Marking 35 years of Dumb Type with a comprehensive look at their work

Dumb Type is a media artist group formed in 1984, mainly by students of Kyoto City University of Arts. 2019 marks the 35th year since the group was founded. Dumb Type’s members, including central figure Teiji Furuhashi (1960-1995). They developed their own individual creative work while collaborating with each other, and mere highly evaluated as a group without a hierarchy. Comprising large-scale installation pieces, this event is both a major Dumb Type exhibition, and an attempt to survey Dumb Type’s unique and superlative nature, made possible through the efforts of Shiro Takatani and Ryoji Ikeda, who kept the group going after Furuhashi’s death, as well as those of its younger members.
