A wide range of “kara-e” Chinese painting from the Eisei Bunko collection

Since ancient times, Japan has been heavily influenced by Chinese art. The eighth Hosokawa feudal lord over the Kumamoto domain, Narishige (1759-1835) had a strong interest in art, even painting as a hobby himself. It’s also thought that he was an ardent collector of Ming and Qing dynasty Chinese paintings, some of which have come down to the Eisei Bunko’s collection. This exhibition, taking place 260 years after Narishige’s birth, displays Chinese paintings from Eisei Bunko Museum’s collection, showcasing a wide range of “kara-e” paintings, which were much sought-after by feudal lords in the late Edo period.
