Special Exhibition Celebrating the Enthronement of His Majesty the Emperor Shosoin: Essential Treasures of Ancient Japan Passed Down by the Imperial Family 御即位記念特別展「正倉院の世界―皇室がまもり伝えた美―」

Tokyo National Museum, 13-9 Ueno Park, Taito City, Tokyo
2019-10-14 - 2019-11-24

A rare opportunity to see some of Japan’s greatest cultural properties under one roof

Marking the emperor’s ascension to the throne, Tokyo National Museum is hosting a collection of Asuka and Nara period pieces from the Shosoin treasure house and Horyuji treasure collections, which have been handed down through the imperial household. Both collections include cultural properties of international importance, which convey the long history of exchange between East and West. As befits the first year of the new Reiwa era, this exhibition aims to show the world the very best Japanese culture has to offer, through this rare collection of important pieces under one roof. The event showcases irreplaceable examples of beauty passed down by the imperial household, which will continue to be preserved for future generations.
*Some pieces will be replaced during the exhibition period.
