Studying the enduring appeal of uniquely vibrant Mino pottery

During the Momoyama period, pottery tea bowls were made in kilns all over Japan. In Mino (the modern-day Tono region of Gifu Prefecture), tea bowls with powerful form, vibrant color and cutting-edge design (Kiseto, Setoguro, Shino, and Oribe wares) were produced in vast quantities and became hugely popular. This exhibition examines the appeal behind the unique and vivid forms of Mino pottery. Also on display are notable works formerly belonging to prominent tea ceremony enthusiasts, and famous pieces by contemporary potters Toyozo Arakawa and Tokuro Kato, to demonstrate the increasing popularity and renown of Mino pottery in the modern era and beyond.
*Some pieces will be replaced during the exhibition period.
