Looking back over 100 years of the Matsukata Collection

The Matsukata Collection, the nucleus of The National Museum of Western Art’s collection, is comprised of art collected by businessman Kojiro Matsutaka at the beginning of the 20th century. The collection is made up of around 10,000 pieces in a range of genres, including works by Monet, Gauguin and Van Gogh, sculptures by Rodin, modern British paintings and medieval panel paintings, as well as around 8,000 ukiyo-e prints that Matsutaka repurchased for Japan. This exhibition, marking 60 years since the opening, takes a broad view of the collection and displays 160 pieces, including the Monet paintings rediscovered in 2016 which are Water Lilies and Reflections of weeping Willows, as well as historical documents.
