In the Genroku period, azalea horticulture thrived mainly around the Somei area in Komagome, and then spread throughout the city of Edo.

Rikugi-en was right in the middle of this trend, and large numbers of various ancient azalea species were planted that remain to this day.

To match the blooming season of the azaleas, a special azalea guide is available, and there’s also a panel set up that explains Edo azalea horticulture. These and other feature enable you to enjoy experiencing the history of Edo azalea horticulture and Rikugi-en for yourself during the event. Under the gentle spring sun, enjoy the view of colorful red and purple azaleas all over Rikugi-en.
