Tokyo Tower's 333 Carp Streamers (Koinobori) and Giant Pacific Saury Streamer (Sanmanobori) 東京タワー333匹の「鯉のぼり」と巨大「さんまのぼり」

4-2-8 Shibakoen, Minato City, Tokyo
2024-3-20 - 2024-5-6

This year, Tokyo Tower once again welcomes spring in colorful fashion.
As a special celebration of Boys' Day, a precursor to Japan's modern Children's Day holiday, the first floor's main entrance is decorated with vibrant koinobori. These carp-shaped streamers are on display from the Vernal Equinox holiday on Wednesday, March 20 through Monday, May 6, when Children's Day is observed.
The 333 vivid carp flutter in the wind, referencing Tokyo Tower's height of 333 m. When the wind catches them, the streamers look like a school of fish swimming through the sky.

Hidden among the carp is one additional streamer, measuring 6 m long.
This giant "Pacific saury streamer" is a symbol of the ties between the tower and the town of Ofunato in Iwate Prefecture. Tokyo Tower flew this special streamer for the first time in April 2011, to show support for reconstruction efforts in Ofunato after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. It's been part of the tower's yearly decorations ever since.

The blue sky, red tower, and multicolor streamers are a feast for the eyes.

Koinobori are not often seen in Tokyo anymore, but at Tokyo Tower they're still celebrated as a beloved feature of spring. The streamers symbolize the wish for children to growth up healthy. Visit during the event and take pictures with these special decorations.
