The Meiji-Maru 重要文化財 明治丸

2-1-6 Ecchujima, Koto City, Tokyo

The first ship registered as an Important Cultural Property

The Meiji-Maru is more than just Japan’s last remaining iron ship. Built by shipbuilding firm Robert Napier and Sons of Glasgow, England for the Japanese government, the vessel originally served as a lighthouse patrol ship. In later years, it was also used by the Imperial family of Japan. Between 1896 and 1954, the ship was used as a moored training vessel. Taken out of service and preserved as an Important Cultural Property, you can still board the ship for an in-depth look at late 19th-century ship building.
