Ako Lava Flow Trail 火山体験遊歩道

Ako, Miyakemura, Miyakejima, Tokyo

Stroll along the pathway created by one of Mt. Oyama's largest eruptions

The rugged landscape of Miyakejima Island has been formed from repeated eruptions of Mt. Oyama, a still-active volcano located in the center of the island. Lava flow from the 1983 eruption buried the Ako elementary and junior high schools, and their remains can be seen today.

A trek along the Volcano Experience Walking Path will allow you to explore the island’s volcano-crafted landscape, and meet the plants and animals that have amazingly continued to survive on this challenging terrain.
