Kataoka Byoubu 屏風博物館

Code Building K2, 1-31-6 Mukojima, Sumida City, Tokyo

Functional elegance, traditional design

Byoubu, or folding screens, are an integral part of classic Japanese interior design. Ranging from simple, austere designs to extravagant gilded masterpieces, Kataoka Byoubu's permanent collection includes more than 80 unique folding screens, organized by era.

The museum is particularly proud of their selection of karakuri byoubu - "trick" folding screens that change designs when folded a certain way. The museum also has a display of traditional tools, materials, and construction methods used to make these functional art pieces.

Folding screens are available in both full and mini sizes—they make for truly one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Please contact the museum for further details.
