2-36-3 Motomura, Niijima Village, Tokyo

Immerse yourself in the diverse history of Niijima Village

To fully appreciate the culture of Niijima Village, it’s worth making the trip to Niijimamura Museum. The museum covers all facets of life in Niijima Village, from the island's earliest recorded history to its contemporary surfing culture.

Here you can wander through its collection of photos, traditional garments, surfboards, and other artifacts, before exploring the museum's two main feature pieces, large replicas of a Niijima-style Edo-period fishing boat and thatched roof house. Working in collaboration with the local education board and the English department of Niijima High School, the entire museum is entirely bilingual, Japanese and English.
