Sumo Photograph Museum 相撲写真資料館

3-13-2 Ryogoku, Sumida City, Tokyo

Sumo through the decades captured through the lens of camera

South of Ryogoku Station, the Sumo Photograph Museum introduces the history of Japan's national sport over the last hundred years through a diverse collection of photos taken from the earliest days of the Showa period (beginning in late 1926) to 1986, woodblock prints, and other pieces of sumo paraphernalia.

Note that the museum is generally only open on Tuesdays. During the two-week duration of the January, May and September Tokyo tournaments, however, it does open daily. The space is small because the museum is located in what used to be a parking lot.
