Shinjuku Sumitomo Building 新宿住友ビル

2-6-1 Nishi Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo

A city aerie offering views of Tokyo and Mt. Fuji

The Shinjuku Sumitomo Building was for a brief period the tallest structure in Tokyo, and the 52-floor tower still soars above the local skyline, although Godzilla knocked it down in the 1984 film The Return of Godzilla. Primarily a corporate and commercial office space, the building's top five floors are open to the public, featuring restaurants serving French, Italian, teppanyaki steak and kaiseki (a traditional Japanese multi-course meal). Casual izakaya, or Japanese-style pubs, also tenant the building.

There's a free observation deck on the 51st floor offering panoramic views of Tokyo and Mt. Fuji. When it gets dark, dining while looking out over the illuminated version of Tokyo is a peak experience. The Shinjuku Sumitomo Building is just a 7-minute walk from Shinjuku Station.
