Book a seat on one of Japan's low-cost carriers taking you to all corners of the country.

If you are looking for a trip outside the capital, consider flying with one of Japan's domestic airlines. There are a number of low cost carriers that can take you to any of Japan's destinations.

The shinkansen is a quick and comfortable option for traveling around the country, but it is at the higher end of the price spectrum. The vast network of local trains and buses will generally take you anywhere, but what you make up for in cheaper travel costs, you lose in time. Think about using domestic air travel if you are planning a longer trip outside of Tokyo.

Skymark, Air Do, Jetstar, and Peach are some of the low-cost carriers operating out of Tokyo's airports. Fly to Hokkaido in the north, down to Okinawa in the south, and everywhere else in between, at competitive rates and generally between one and three hours.

These lower prices are not just limited to the small carriers. Japan's major airlines, JAL and ANA, also offer a discount price for domestic routes for its passengers from outside Japan. For more information check out JAL's Early Bird Fare Flash Sale, or ANA's Discover JAPAN Fare.

Passenger planes fly between the small Chofu Airport in Western Tokyo and the islands of Oshima, Niijima, Kozushima, and Miyakejima. Flight times are between 25 and 50 minutes. From these islands, you can explore the surrounding islands.
