The history of Sumida River Fireworks Festival can be traced back to 1733, when the first Ryogoku River Opening ceremony occured.This ceremony was held to pray for the souls of those lost to the widespread famine and disease which hit the area in 1732. The Ryogoku River Opening ceremony took place upstream of Ryogoku Bridge until 1961. In 1978, it was rebranded as the Sumida River Fireworks Festival. Today, it is one of the largest and most famous fireworks festivals in Tokyo. In addition to the traditional fireworks display, the main venue will also host a contest, where new and innovative firework creations will compete for your attention.
