Mt. Kumotori 雲取山

Okutama-machi, Tokyo

Climb the highest point in Tokyo

Straddling the borders of Tokyo, Saitama, and Yamanashi Prefectures, Mt. Kumotori (2,017 meters) is Tokyo's highest elevation. Known in Japanese as "cloud grabber mountain," you can see panoramic views of the neighboring mountain ranges from the summit, and Mt. Fuji on a clear day. In spring and summer, you can see fields of colorful wildflowers.

Guides recommend setting aside two days to climb Kumotori, starting from Mitsumine-jinja Shrine and ending at Okutama Station. There is a mountain hut on the shoulder of the summit where you can stay on tatami and futons, and there is also a paid camping area. The hike is rated as moderate to difficult, so make sure to do your research and prepare yourself for the hike before starting out.
