Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum

Step into the world of Japan's foremost abstract artist

Taro Okamoto is one of Japan's most famous modern artists known for his avant-garde sculptures and paintings. After his death in 1996, his home and studio were opened to the public in the form of this small museum. Here, you can step back in time and glimpse his studio just as it once was. All of Okamoto's varied works were conceived here, including the famous Tower of the Sun located in Expo Park in Osaka.

Many of Okamoto's drawings, sketches, and sculptures, as well as reference materials on post-war culture, are on display here. The studio itself is also of note, having been built by the famous Japanese artchitect Junzo Sakakura. With its concrete walls and lens-shaped roof, it is regarded as a fine work of modern architecture. The space also features a sculpture garden featuring Okamoto's sculptures among tropical plants.
