Main content starts here.

People watch the first sunrise of the year and pray for both their own health and safety and peace for the world as a whole. This practice was added on to a traditional ceremony held continuously at Yakuoin Temple, and is implemented as the Light-Welcoming Festival.
Viewing the first sunrise starts from around 6:30 at the summit of Mt. Takao. If the skies are clear, you can see all the way to Mt. Fuji, Japan's sacred mountain.
A prayer area is set up at the 599 meter elevation of the mountain summit, and the monks chant the sutras and pray for safety in the new year.
