This shrine was established in 458 in order to worship Ameno-tajikaraonomikoto, and in 1355, the spirit of Sugawara Michizane was also enshrined.Since then, the shrine has been worshiped by many scholars and men of letters. Nowadays the shrine is famous as “Yushima Tenjin”, the kami of learning. The shrine, made totally of cypress, was built in 1995.
