<Message to the Tourists>
When you pass through the Somon (the main gate) that was built at the establishment of the temple and head up 96 stone steps, you will reach Ikegami Honmonji Temple. This temple spaciously stands in extensive grounds, which allows you to worship quietly at your leisure. Here, there are old buildings having survived war damage including 5-storied pagoda, which is the oldest in the Kanto area. In Ikegami Baien (plum tree garden) located behind the temple, there are tearooms around the pond, as well as Suikinkutsu (literally "water koto cave"), a garden decor used as a hidden style of Japanese gardens. Because of these attractions, you can enjoy the garden no matter what season you visit in. This route is suitable for the tourists who have already visited many famous spots in Tokyo or for those who want to avoid hustle and bustle of a big city.
