Ikebana x Hyakudan Kaidan 2017 at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo

Hotel Gajoen Tokyo is now hosting Ikebana x Hyakudan Kaidan 2017, a floral exhibition usually organized in spring but held in autumn this year. One highlight is the seasonal flora arranged in traditional Japanese style by artists of 51 schools, with the displays changing each week. The other is the venue itself, the Tokyo-designated tangible cultural property dubbed Hyakudan Kaidan, meaning “stairway of a hundred steps” but referring to a wooden building erected in 1935. The staircase in question, actually consisting of 99 steps made of zelkova boards, connects seven rooms designed under a different theme, each with the ceiling and screens showcasing a world of beauty created by renowned Japanese painters. The exhibition offers a good opportunity to witness the luxurious interior, as it is normally closed to the public. Join the celebration and enjoy the space reflecting classical Japanese aesthetics along with the ephemeral, living art of ikebana.
