A new genre of competition via electronic games

Electronic sports, or e-sports for short, is a new genre of competition drawing attention in the United States, China, and other countries around the world. Unlike sports that involve physical activity, e-sports players compete in computer and video games. Outside Japan, highly skilled players, backed by sponsors, compete over enormous amounts of prize money in tournaments that provide great entertainment complete with spectators and media coverage, just like conventional professional sports. One contest, so big that it’s called the Olympics of e-sports, attracts players from Japan, too. Game types and play styles are diverse. Besides the major multiplayer shooter games and real-time strategy games, there are also sports games such as soccer and martial arts, which can be played either individually or as a team and by players of all age groups. Autumn is the perfect season to take up a new hobby. Why not try your hand at e-sports?
