Mt. Mitake & Mt. Takao

Autumn leaves are at their most beautiful in Tokyo from late October to mid November on Mt. Mitake, and from mid to late November on Mt. Takao. Both locations have a number of hiking courses, which are perfect for taking in the scarlet foliage covering the slopes of the entire mountain range. Recommended spots on Mt. Mitake are Mt. Otsuka-yama, Nago-daira Plateau, and Rock Garden. On Mt. Takao, the best views are from the cable car, Yakuo-in Temple, and the area between the summit and Momiji-daira Plateau. From November 1 to 30 is the Mt. Takao Momiji Matsuri (Maple Festival), the Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo puppet theater featuring on weekends and holidays, taiko drum performances, sales of sake in single-serving wooden boxes, and kokeshi doll-making demonstrations.

Autumn leaves and even sweets
'Autumn' Tokyo by Seasons

The crisp breeze that sweeps through Japan makes autumn the perfect season for exploring the city on foot. Trees entertain passersby with vivid red leaves, and ginkgo-lined streets invite strollers to a golden arch. Mt. Takao and Mt. Mitake are recommended spots for hiking and taking in the sight of autumn foliage. Tokyo in autumn also offers sweets made with the season’s freshest chestnuts, apples, grapes, and other fruit and berries collected from across Japan—a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.
