Tokyo Station Marunouchi Station Building

Long-awaited completion

Preservation and renovation work on the Tokyo Station Marunouchi Station Building is slated for long-awaited completion in October 2012, to unveil a reproduction of Tokyo Station as it was some hundred years ago.
Completed in 1914, the Marunouchi Station Building features a historic, classic red brick facade long loved as the symbol of Tokyo Station. Although the north and south domes, the roof, and the interior destroyed in World War II were later rebuilt, the project launched in 2007 seeks to replicate the complete original exterior as well as expand on the building’s functions and prepare it for large earthquakes. Construction work has been technically very difficult, as it attempts to preserve and carry over the exterior walls and other major surviving features of the original building.
Along with the Marunouchi Station Building will open Tokyo Station Hotel and Tokyo Station Gallery. Tokyo Station Hotel is the only establishment of its kind situated within an important cultural property of Japan. The interior is designed in sophisticated, classical European style to blend with the splendor of the exterior. Guestrooms come in six types including Palace Side rooms, which overlook the Marunouchi district, and Dome Side rooms, which command a view of the reliefs on the renovated domes. Tokyo Station Gallery celebrates the completion of the Marunouchi Station Building with cutting-edge art merged into the history of Tokyo Station in an exhibition called Shihatsu densha wo machi nagara (Waiting for the Day’s First Train) from October 1 to late January 2013. The revamped Tokyo Station will further offer services for travelers from abroad at a JR East Travel Service Center.
Be a witness to this new chapter in the history of Tokyo’s flagship station.
