Kawagoe, a castle town, was a center for water transport and served as a base for Edo's food product. The lined merchant houses add to the strong remnant of the past. The area is known as Little Edo.
The best way to enjoy the atmosphere of Little Edo is to walk down the Ichibangai shopping promenade, also known as the "Town of Kura (Kuradori)." You can also find the famous "Bell of Time" and "Kurazukuri Shiryo-kan (Merchant House Reference Center)."
At its peak, about 70 shops manufactured dozens of different traditional Japanese sweets. Even now, there are about 20 shops manufacturing Japanese cakes and candies.
