IC cards

These IC transport cards, which are interchangeable all across the country, can be used for traveling on major railways and busses in the metropolitan area. If you buy a new card with an advanced payment, you can pass the ticket barrier by touching the automatic ticket gate or bus ticket reading machine with the card, and the fare will be deducted automatically. This card can also be used for shopping as electronic money at registered shops.

Suica

The Suica is sold with the following starting denominations: 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen, 3,000 yen, 4,000 yen, 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen, 500 yen of which is the deposit.
You don't have to take the card out of its holder, but scan it along the card reader located on the top of the ticket gate. If the balance runs short, you simply recharge it.
Suica can be used on railways and buses from Hokkaido to Kyushu in the SAPICA, Kitaca, PASMO, TOICA, manaca, ICOCA, PiTaPa, SUGOCA, nimoca, HAYAKAKEN, odeca, icsca, and RYUTO service areas, as well as at stores displaying these logos.
For Suica service areas, see here( External link ).

PASMO

A chargeable ticket system that can be used for train/bus services on participating private railways, subways and bus networks (with some exceptions).
By touching the charged PASMO card to a scanner on the top of ticket gate (no need to take the card out from its case), an appropriate fare is automatically deducted from the card.
Services are available where your card is charged automatically at the ticket gate when the balance of your card goes below a designated amount. A 500 yen deposit is required. The card can be purchased at stations and sales offices of participating train/bus companies.
PASMO can also be used in the Suica service areas.
PASMO may be used at all stations and service areas of railway operators across Japan that accept the card (excluding the Izuhakone Railway Sunzu Line and the Toei Ueno Zoo Monorail Line) and on certain routes of bus operators that accept the card. (As of March 19, 2016, 26 railway operators and 79 bus operators accept Pasmo.)
For operators that accept PASMO, see here( External link ).
