When walking Tokyo's streets, a taxi is never too far away. Keep an eye out for green, yellow and black cabs.

Signs in the window highlight whether the cab is free (空車), on a pick up or going home (回送)—many now have signs in English. Dedicated to cleanliness and customer service, Tokyo's taxis are spotless and the drivers trustworthy. Note that a language barrier can exist, so if possible, having your destination written in Japanese will help bridge this gap. In most cases, fares start at 500 yen. While fares are based on the meter, you can pay a fixed fare when traveling from the airport.

Fixed fares

The cost of a fixed fare taxi from Narita Airport and Haneda Airport is based on where your destination falls within the pre-designated zones. The Teito Motor Transportation company offers taxi information including useful apps and discount tickets.

Sightseeing Taxis

Sightseeing taxis are a convenient way to visit Tokyo's top sightseeing spots at your own pace. They offer access to places you may not be able to visit on a bus tour, and your driver can often tell you little-known stories about local areas.
