Note: The 2023 installment of this event has already taken place.
The Niijima International Glass Art Festival, an art event held every autumn since 1988, aims to foster a new form of regional culture: Niijima glassware. The raw material used to make the glassware comes from a rare volcanic rock native to the region, known locally as "koga stone." The event is also famous as an opportunity for international exchange and skill development in the field of glass-working, with famous artists from all over the world taking part each year.
The workshop instructors for the 34th event will be William Gudenrath, well-known for his research and work on Venetian glass, and Kentaro Yanagi, who has been attracting attention for his glass structures and unique burner work.
Public demonstrations and auctions will be held on the final day. What's more, the diverse production processes and collaborations of the participating artists will be made available online.
