Crafts of East Asia from the Museum Collection

In Japan, artistically crafted handmade implements called kogei, are loved for what is known as their ‘beauty of utility.’ Over the centuries, Japanese artisans have produced kogei objects richly expressing their harmony with nature. Such objects include both works of exquisite artistic refinement, created using demanding techniques, and works with a rustic beauty created for use in everyday life.

Beyond Japan, unique kogei cultures have also bloomed in China, Korea, and the Ryukyu Islands, stimulated by an exchange of influences among their cultures. This exhibition presents the beauty and fascination of East Asian kogei through some 80 works from Japan and East Asia selected from Sekido Museum of Art’s kogei collection.
