Megane-iwa Rock メガネ岩

A bizarre arch-shaped rock, formed by lava and erosion

The rock formations at the Imasaki Coast, on the volcanic island of Miyakejima, were formed by flowing lava from an eruption that occurred in 1643. Centuries of erosion created a rock with two arch-shaped holes, which resembled a pair of spectacles. It's known as Megane-iwa Rock, because "spectacles" is "megane" in Japanese. Unfortunately, the Isewan Typhoon of 1959 caused one of the arches to collapse, leaving the rock in its current form.
