Tanashi Jinja Shrine 田無神社

3-7-4 Tanashicho, Nishitokyo City, Tokyo

Historic shrine guarded by dragons

Marvel at the intricate work of renowned Edo Period sculptor Shunpyo Shimamura at the Tanashi Jinja Shrine, where the inner shrine was painstakingly carved out of hardwood over a two year period around the year 1875.

At the main hall—designated a Tokyo Cultural Property— you can pray to a sacred golden dragon and other indigenous gods for business prosperity, excellent academic grades, or a speedy recovery from illness or injury.

While the shrine's precise origins are unknown, records show its existence dates back to the late 13th century. In 1670, it relocated to its current site in western Tokyo, about 30 minutes by public transport from Seibu-Shinjuku Station.
