HIBIYA OKUROJI 日比谷OKUROJI

1-7-1 Uchisaiwaicho, Chiyoda City, Tokyo

A Chic, Historic Spot for the Sophisticated Shopper

Come and explore a fascinating historical area with a modern twist. At Hibiya Okuroji, you can indulge in high-end shopping in one of Tokyo's most central and chic neighborhoods.

Tips

  • The red brick arches that house Hibiya Okuroji were part of Japan's very first elevated railway tracks
  • Sample all kinds of regional specialties and unique items from across Japan
  • The neighborhood has a lot of fun bars where you can enjoy the Tokyo nightlife

Hibiya Okuroji is a shopping and restaurant complex. One of its biggest draws lies in its unique location—the complex is under a 300-meter stretch of railway arches between Yurakucho Station and Shimbashi Station. These beautiful red brick arches are historic, dating all the way back to 1910.

Today, a visit to the arches reveals famous brands and shops offering food, drink, fashion, and general goods. There is a wide array of restaurants, cafes, and bars to enjoy. For entertainment, Hibiya Okuroji hosts music and art pop-up events, as well as seasonal events which focus on regional specialties. From time-to-time, you can even participate in workshops to create arts and crafts. There's a range of choices for the discerning shopper who wants to explore more of what Japan has to offer. This chic, sophisticated spot is in the Hibiya-Ginza area, known for its fashionable and classy atmosphere.

The name "Okuroji" is derived from the characteristics of the location: it's tucked away in the depths or "oku" of Hibiya and Ginza; and it's like an alley or "roji" under the elevated railway tracks. Visitors will enjoy the quiet thrill of uncovering somewhere a little hidden and out of the way. Everything about the location invites you to come and explore further, like you've stumbled upon a secret base.

The beautiful arches were originally modeled on viaducts found in the German capital of Berlin. They are the careful work of skilled Japanese craftsmen who built them by hand under the guidance of German engineers. The construction is so solid that over a century later, the arches are still in use. More than that, the arches are an important part of the constant railway traffic in this busy city. The addition of Hibiya Okuroji below them only adds to the appeal of this cozy corner in central Tokyo.

Hibiya Okuroji is the perfect spot to visit if you're in the mood for a little high-end shopping, a relaxing gourmet lunch, or for a sophisticated evening out. The location also makes for a great springboard to further explore Tokyo's nightlife in Hibiya and Ginza.
