The long-planned and much-anticipated Azabudai Hills development is scheduled to open on November 24, 2023. Situated between Roppongi and Toranomon Hills, and not far from the iconic Tokyo Tower, this “Modern Urban Village” filled with lush greenery will be a great place to visit for shopping, dining, and relaxing in the heart of Tokyo. It will also provide exciting opportunities to enjoy art and culture, with the relocation and reopening of one of Tokyo’s most popular attractions in recent years, the record-breaking digital art museum, teamLab Borderless.

The Birth of a New Urban Oasis

After 30 years of discussion and planning, the redevelopment of an area of around 8.1 hectares between the neighborhoods of Toranomon and Azabudai began in 2019. The Toranomon-Azabudai Project is scheduled for completion on November 24, 2023. Designed around a theme of “Green & Wellness,” it will include a variety of new commercial facilities, as well as a hotel, residential areas, office space, and school facilities. It aims to provide opportunities for people to encounter art and greenery in public spaces.
This urban oasis will contain approximately 24,000 square meters of green space, and visitors will be able to appreciate the change of seasons, with around 320 species of plants, 11 kinds of fruit trees such as blueberries, lemons and peaches, as well as herbs and edible plants. In spring you’ll be able to enjoy a variety of cherry blossoms which will bloom from February to early May.
Around the three main skyscrapers, including the Mori JP Tower soaring to a height of around 330 meters, you’ll find tree-lined streets and garden plazas filled with greenery.

Form Meets Function

The Central Square is an open space of around 6,000 square meters where visitors can relax and interact. The focal point is the Azabudai Hills Arena, with its large roof canopy, called “The Cloud,” designed by the Heatherwick Studio (an award-winning British design and architecture studio perhaps best known for the London 2012 Olympic Cauldron). Refresh yourself with a drink or snack at the Azabudai Hills Cafe. The surrounding lawn areas will be dotted with public artworks for visitors to enjoy close up. There’s also the Azabudai Hills Gallery which will promote cultural activities and showcase art, fashion, and entertainment. The entire project is designed to promote sustainability in urban development, with a focus on decarbonization, recycling, and renewable energy.

A Wealth of Options for Tokyo Dining and Shopping

Dining options are available to satisfy nearly any palate, from Japanese staples such as tonkatsu, tempura and ramen, to Western offerings like hamburg steak, pizza and even vegan cuisine. For shopping fans, there will be a variety of retail facilities, including 150 stores offering the top names and luxury brands in fashion, food, and beauty. You’ll also be able to visit a collection of 31 Japanese specialty stores in the Azabudai Hills Market. Furthermore, the international art collective known as “teamLab,” which set a new world record for the most visited single-artist museum in the world, will be relocating its popular immersive art project “Borderless” to Azabudai Hills in January 2024.
