Sunshine City サンシャインシティ

How to Get There

Pokemon, Totoro and Dragon Ball magic at Ikebukuro's Sunshine City

Sunshine City was built with the concept of a “city within a city”, that is, a building with virtually all the facilities you can think of housed under one roof. It was opened in 1978 and has not only food and shopping options, but also indoor theme parks, as well as an aquarium, planetarium and a sky deck.

Tips

  • Seeing Tokyo from an observatory 60 stories high
  • Immersing yourself in J-culture

Fans of J-culture converge from around the world on Sunshine City, which is not only home to one of Japan's largest Pokemon Centers but also the Donguri Kyowakoku, which sells items associated with Studio Ghibli characters such as Totoro and Ponyo, and feature movies like Spirited Away. Namco, meanwhile, owns the J-World Tokyo indoor theme park that is chock full of attractions based on its popular manga series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto.

With about 250 shops over two buildings, there is also a lot of shopping and eating, including a gyoza stadium in the Namjatown facility that brings together a dozen of Japan's most famous gyoza stalls.
