Note: The 2023 installment of this event has already taken place.

Tori-no-ichi is an annual festival that has been celebrated at shrines and temples across Japan since the Edo period. It is traditionally held in November, on days that the lunar calendar designates as days of the rooster. People wish for good fortune and business prosperity on these auspicious days.

In the Asakusa area of Tokyo, these festivities take place at two adjoining venues: Chokokuji Temple and Otori Shrine. The surrounding area buzzes until late at night with merchants selling beautiful gold- and silver-decorated kumade, ornamental rakes believed to bring their owners luck. Check out this exciting autumn festival for yourself to get a true sense of old-school Tokyo.
