Note: The 2024 installment of this event has already taken place.
Chichijima, one of the Ogasawara Islands, holds an event every January 1st to mark the earliest opening of public beaches in Japan.
There's a lot to look forward to here on New Year's Day, starting with a Shinto ceremony in which a priest prays for safety at sea. Afterward, the beaches are declared open. You can then enjoy local performing arts, a traditional rice cake-throwing ritual, and a prize raffle. Visit the Ogasawara Islands for a unique and unforgettable New Year that both locals and visitors can enjoy.
