Ghibli Museum, Mitaka 三鷹の森ジブリ美術館

A whimsical museum dedicated to one of Japan's most beloved animators

You don't have to be a fan of Studio Ghibli's magical animations to enjoy this topsy-turvy museum. Surrounded by a tree-filled park and filled with charming details, walking into the Ghibli Museum feels like entering a storybook.

Don't Miss

  • Watching original short animations in the Saturn Theater
  • Looking for the characters hidden in the decor and architecture

This cozy and homey haven was designed by Hayao Miyazaki himself, a fully immersive experience into the world of Ghibli movies, methods of animation and the director's inspiration. Winding staircases, intricate mosaics and detailed metalwork create a fairytale-like atmosphere. Permanent exhibits include a reproduction of an artist's studio with hundreds of sketches, while the temporary exhibitions change depending on new film releases.

Children 12 and younger will have a wonderful time playing on the fluffy Cat Bus and watching special short movies which you can only see here. Up on the rooftop you can pose beside a friendly robot from the movie Laputa (Castle in the Sky). Advance reservations are a must for this popular art museum, as you cannot buy tickets on the day of your visit. To avoid disappointment, try to book at least a couple months in advance.
