Aoyama Cemetery 青山霊園

2-32-2 Minami-aoyama, Minato City, Tokyo

Your current location:

Japan's first public cemetery

Located in the chic neighborhood of Aoyama is the sprawling Aoyama Cemetery. Opened in 1874, it is home to the graves of many of Tokyo's most historically and culturally important people, and during the Meiji Period it was the main location for a large number of foreigners' graves.
People come to the cemetery to lay the ashes of loved ones to rest, but it is open to the public, and is a pleasant place to walk around. The park is full of cherry trees, and in spring the area does become a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing parties.
