Meguro Citizens' Festival (Kumin Matsuri) 目黒区民まつり

1-25-8 Meguro, Meguro City, Tokyo
2023-10-8

Note: The 2023 installment of this event has already taken place.

The Meguro Citizens' Festival is one of Meguro City's largest festivals. Its four main attractions are the Meguro Pacific Saury Festival (Meguro no Sanma Matsuri), an exhibition of regional specialties (Furusato Bussanten), a festival square, and a children's square.

The festival dedicated to the Pacific saury (a fish called "sanma" in Japanese) is immensely popular. Each year, it attracts crowds upon crowds of visitors, all lined up by the Megurogawa River for a taste of 5,000 fresh charcoal-grilled Pacific sauries from Kesennuma, Meguro's sister city in Miyagi Prefecture. The grilled sauries are garnished with kabosu, a citrus fruit from Oita Prefecture. The best part is that these sauries are given away for free.

The regional specialties exhibition showcases delicacies from across Japan—from Aomori Prefecture in north to Kagoshima Prefecture in the south. Meanwhile, the festival square features entertainment such as taiko drumming and rakugo storytelling. The children's square, with its fun activities for parents and children alike, is also very popular.
