Main content starts here.

Wisteria flowers begin blooming all at once in late April. These lovely lavender-colored flowers are comprised of several bunches, and are especially beautiful when dangled from wisteria trellises.

Kameido Tenjin Shrine is known as the best place in Tokyo to view wisterias. Beneath the wisteria trellises is a quiet pond, creating the unique scenery of purple flowers reflected on the surface of the water. These beautiful wisteria flowers were planted during the Edo period. Records indicate that Tsunayoshi, the fifth Tokugawa shogun, and Yoshimune, the eighth shogun, visited this shrine to see beautiful wisteria flowers. These legendary wisterias are also the subject of many ukiyoe (color prints) and other works of art.

As you walk to Kameido Tenjin Shrine from Kameido Station, we especially recommend that you enjoy soaking in the atmosphere of the shitamachi (old downtown area).
