1-1-12 Oji-Hon-cho, Kita City, Tokyo

A top Tokyo shrine and a spot to see ancient dance performances in August

Oji-jinja Shrine in Tokyo's Kita City, thought to be over700 years old, is perhaps best known for its colorful festivals. In August, the shrine holds its famous dengakumai dance performances, thought to have first been witnessed in the Imperial Court during the Heian period (794-1185). The shrine is one of the ten "Tokyo Jissha" shrines designated to protect the city, but is also known as a spot for newlyweds and expectant mothers to receive blessings from the deities.
