Akigawa Valley 秋川渓谷

Akiruno City, Tokyo

Discover one of Tokyo's most therapeutic nature getaways

One of Tokyo's tranquil and therapeutic nature getaway spots, Akigawa Valley offers places to go fishing, trekking trails, and other activities that will enthuse outdoor lovers.

Tips

  • You can barbecue your catch straight after fishing
  • Enjoy truly spectacular views of autumn foliage from Ishibunebashi Bridge , which looks down over the gorge

Set up camp at the riverside and rent a barbecue pit—available all year round. There are multiple operators, including Shizenjin-mura, which also rents out log houses and tent sites for camping. Over at the Akigawa International Trout Fishing Ground, you can fish and barbecue your catch for a fee, with rental rods and bait available for an added charge.

Akigawa translates to "autumn stream" in English. When the lush, verdant greenery of the gorge morphs into autumnal shades—exemplified by fiery red maples and golden yellow ginkgoes—it's easy to understand how the valley got its name. One of the best places to view the autumn leaves is from Ishibunebashi Bridge.

Other popular spots include Seoto-no-Yu Spa, an elegant onsen facility with indoor and open-air baths. Visitors can enjoy fantastic views from the bathtubs, no matter the season.

If you are a fan of natural limestone formations, Otake Limestone Cave is also worth a visit. The cave measures 300 m in length and has been designated as a Natural Monument by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for its academic value.
