Celebrated theater where innovation is on show
Originally opened in 1893 as a theater catering to Tokyo’s military and middle classes, Meijiza Theater has long been a place for people to escape from daily life and take in some culture.
Supported by locals as a place to view Kabuki and watch performers singing Enka folksongs, Meijiza Theater was the first theater in Tokyo illuminated by electricity. Boasting state-of-the-art equipment, the theater continues to innovate and propel Japan’s theater culture, recently hosting a hybrid anime and live drama event specifically targeting tourists and non-Japanese audiences.
